The five-in-a-row Leinster champions open their 2010 Allianz League account with the most intimidating trip possible to Killarney. Thats not because Kerry are current league and All-Ireland champions – but because they spanked Dublin by 17 points when the counties last met.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama paid somber tribute Friday to the seven CIA employees killed in one of the worst attacks in the history of the U.S. intelligence agency, calling them patriots who “served in the shadows and took pride in it” before paying the highest cost for freedom. “To their colleagues and all who served with them — those here today, those still recovering, those watching around the world — I say: Let their sacrifice be a summons,” Obama said. “To carry on their work. To complete this mission. To win this war, and to keep our country safe.” The seven CIA employees and a Jordanian intelligence officer were killed when a suicide bomber detonated his cache of explosives at Camp Chapman, a tightly secured CIA base in Khost province, a dangerous region southeast of the Afghan capital Kabul. The CIA had cultivated the bomber — a Jordanian doctor identified as Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi — in hopes of obtaining information about al-Qaidas second in command. Al-Balawi turned out to be a double-agent. In a video broadcast after his death, the bomber said the attack was meant to avenge the death of the former Pakistani Taliban leader in a CIA missile strike.

Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2009 increased 67% to a record
$21,377,000 compared to $12,833,000 for the fourth quarter of 2008.
Acquisitions completed during 2009 contributed revenue of $6,814,000 for
the fourth quarter of 2009. Net income for the fourth quarter of 2009
was $1,590,000, or $.17 per diluted share, at an effective income tax
rate of 39%. Net income for the fourth quarter of 2009 included a charge
of $735,000, or $.05 per diluted share, representing contingent
consideration (earn-outs) on 2009 acquisitions in excess of amounts
previously estimated. The Company does not anticipate any additional
material adjustments to contingent consideration payable for its 2009
acquisitions. Adjusting for this charge, non-GAAP net income increased
38% to $2,051,000, or $.22 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of
2009 compared to $1,489,000, or $.17 per diluted share, for the fourth
quarter of 2008 (see table below for a reconciliation of non-GAAP to
GAAP financial measures). The effective income tax rate for the fourth
quarter of 2008 was 35%.
Gross profit increased 53% to $7,289,000, or 34% of revenue, for the
fourth quarter of 2009 compared to $4,769,000, or 37% of revenue, for
the fourth quarter of 2008. Excluding the impact of the August 31, 2009
acquisition of Medical Dictation Services, Inc. (“MDSI”), gross profit
was 36% of revenue for the fourth quarter of 2009. The 2010 integration
plan for MDSI – as with all of Transcend’s acquisitions – includes the
conversion of a portion of the acquired business to Transcend’s
BeyondTXT platform, leveraging speech recognition technology to improve
profitability.
Operating income increased 20% to $2,736,000 for the fourth quarter of
2009 compared to $2,283,000 for the fourth quarter of 2008. Adjusting
for the $735,000 contingent consideration charge, non-GAAP operating
income for the fourth quarter of 2009 increased 52% to $3,471,000, or
16% of revenue (see reconciliation table below).

One Saudi Arabian braved flash floods in Jeddah to rescue two family members and dozens of strangers from drowning. This act of heroism was made more remarkable by the fact that the driver, who threw a rope to stranded cars and then dragged them out, was a woman–which makes it a violation of Saudi Arabias ban on woman drivers.

THE trouble with former Lib Dem golden boy Mark Oaten is he behaves as if everyones forgotten the sordid sex scandal that wrecked his career. But they havent on Essexs grotesque Goresbrook estate, where a gang of local lads spotted the fallen political idol and yelled: “Are you the one that got done for the rent boys?” As the disgraced member for Winchester confirmed he had indeed betrayed his family in murky liaisons with male prostitutes, one cruel yob snarled: “Youve got Aids!” The foolish Mr Oaten should never have taken part in C4s deeply unoriginal Tower Block Of Commons. Ill at ease with the working classes, Labour veteran Austin Mitchell refused to live with them and insisted his wife came along for the ride. Man of the people. IT was gone midnight when we passed the “Sea Level” sign. So it was only the ear-popping which gave away the fact we were closing in on the lowest point on Earth. the Dead Sea, 422 metres below. The waters health properties have been revered since Old Testament days when Herod the Great used it as a resort. The mudbath that followed was an altogether different experience. After being plastered in mud, I was placed in a human sling, wrapped in something which felt (and looked) like clingfilm and lowered into a bath of hot water. Think Guantanamo Bay for tourists! Cleopatra and Queen Sheba are among those who swore by the Dead Sea mud – thats the thing about Jordan, wherever you go, you touch ancient history.
PUBS are charging up to 60p MORE for a soft drink than a pint of beer, a Sunday Mirror survey reveals. A pint of standard bitter is cheaper than an equivalent amount of non-alcoholic drink such as cola and lemonade in almost HALF of Britains pubs. One city centre bar was charging pounds 2.60 for a pint of orange juice – when its bitter was just pounds 2. The massive mark-ups on non-alcoholic drinks were last night condemned by health campaigners. At the Crown in Birmingham city centre, we were charged pounds 2.30 for a pint of lemonade – 31p more than a pint of Pedigree bitter and 15p more than a pint of Carlsberg lager. At the Newt pub in the citys Stephensons Street, we paid pounds 2.13 for a pint of orange juice – 23p more than its Marstons bitter.
Nevada officials said the state may drop out of Medicaid if the health-care bill passes. Instead it would help its low-income legal residents participate in the federally subsidized exchanges that the bill would establish. The resulting insurance policies would doubtless be more attractive to beneficiaries than Medicaid is.

No matter how you cut it, Austin Collie is going to have an impact on todays Super Bowl in Miami. The former BYU receiver has been handed a fairly decent chunk of the offense for Indianapolis, a script that fits alongside veteran stars Reggie Wayne, tight end Dallas Clark and Pierre Garcon. Collie could get key passes thrown his way and make some big plays. Or he could be another part of the Colts table dressing in a loss, and not be a factor. His impact could then be that he didnt have any. Wayne came up hurting in practice on Friday and the three-time All Pro left practice 20 minutes early with an aggravated soft tissue issue below his kneecap. The Colts say Wayne will play today against the Saints. But if he doesnt, or he is limited, Collie could find a bigger piece in Peyton Mannings game plan.
SALT LAKE CITY — To some folks, it looks like the Utah basketball team may have hit rock-bottom Wednesday night when the Utes were beaten by an average Colorado State team 65-50 at home. That hasnt happened since 1992 when the Utes, under third-year coach Rick Majerus, were beaten by the Rams by an almost identical 67-48 score at the Huntsman Center. That 92 loss put the Utes two games under .500 in league play just as this years Utes find themselves under third-year coach Jim Boylen this year at 3-5. In order to finish 9-7 in Mountain West Conference play, with an outside shot at the NIT, the Utes will need to win six of their eight remaining games on the league schedule. That will be tough, considering how the Utes season has gone so far. While the Utes have enjoyed better than expected seasons from sophomore center David Foster (fourth in the nation in blocked shots), freshman guard Marshall Henderson (11.5 ppg) and JC transfer Jay Watkins (10.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg), the play of the three returning veterans has been disappointing.

NEW YORK — Stocks buckled Thursday under the growing belief that the global economy is weaker than many investors expected and likely to stop companies from hiring. The Dow Jones industrials briefly traded below 10,000 for the first time in three months. Demand for safer investments sent the dollar and Treasurys higher and the euro falling. Major indexes skidded as much as 3.1 percent to their lowest levels in three months. The Dow fell 268 points and briefly traded below 10,000 for the first time since Nov. 6. The Dows 2.6 percent drop was its biggest in seven months. And it was the ninth time in 14 days that the Dow has moved by more than 100 points. Just 273 stocks rose on the New York Stock Exchange, while more than 2,800 fell. One of the weak performers was metals producer Freeport-McMoRan Copper Gold Inc., which tumbled 5.3 percent. The few winners included Cisco Systems Inc. following a big increase in its earnings. Consolidated trading volume at the NYSE rose to 5.9 billion shares from 4.3 billion Wednesday. The days news reminded investors that the global economic recovery remains tenuous. It also raised questions about whether the market can resume its rebound from 12-year lows it hit last March.

The earthquake spared nothing, from ordinary homes to the palace and the cathedral, and cost tens of thousands of lives. This was the Lisbon earthquake of 1755; Voltaire used the sudden and overwhelming destruction in Candide to undermine the theodicy of Leibniz. Two hundred and fifty-five years later we are still using disasters to score theological and political points. After the Haitian earthquake Pat Robertson mused on CBN that the countrys troubles stemmed from a pact with the devil made by rebellious slaves in 1791. David Brooks gave a secularist interpretation for New York Times readers: “This is not a natural disaster story. This is a poverty story . . . about poorly constructed buildings, bad infrastructure and terrible public services.” Yes, Haitis woes, before and after the earthquake, are exacerbated by cultural, social, and political corruption. But let no one make too much of that. No human order is shock-proof, no human life is completely secure in this vale of tears. We do not know the day nor the hour. May God, and the U.S. Navy, help the sufferers.

Roger Burkhardt Joins Panel to Discuss GRC-Enabled Cloud During InformationWeek
Virtual Event
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Ingres Corporation, the leading open source database management company
and pioneer of the New Economics of IT, announced today that Roger
Burkhardt, president and CEO of Ingres, will participate in an InformationWeek
virtual event this week titled, “Modernizing IT Governance, Risk and
Compliance to Accelerate Flexibility and Visibility.” Burkhardt joins as
part of a panel on “How to Prepare for a GRC-enabled Cloud:
Understanding New Requirements Around Building Stronger Governance in
the Public Cloud.” The panel is set for Wednesday, February 10, from
1:00 – 1:45 p.m. (EST), where participants will discuss best practices
for enterprise migration to the cloud and look at what organizations
must be aware of when investigating cloud services.
As the CEO of Ingres, the world’s second largest open source company and
the former CTO of the NYSE, Burkhardt brings a unique perspective to the
panel and will share details on how embracing alternative technologies
is a more cost efficient and innovative way to manage the bottom line.
Burkhardt will be joined by Bryan Doerr, CTO at Savvis Communications;
Paul Lappas, vice president of engineering at GoGrid; and Greg Shipley,
CTO at Neohapsis for a discussion on how to prepare for a GRC-enabled
cloud, and specifically understanding new requirements around building
stronger governance in the public cloud. The panel will be moderated by
Andrew Conry-Murray, new products and business editor, InformationWeek
and NetworkComputing.
“The cloud model provides an excellent opportunity to move to a more
flexible and lower cost model, but it requires smart choices by IT
leaders to manage risk and service levels to avoid being locked into
proprietary interfaces,” said Burkhardt. “Stock exchanges are among the
earliest providers of cloud services and I look forward to sharing my
experiences with an audience of InformationWeek readers who are
developing their strategies to exploit the cloud model. Cloud computing
is the future and we are at the start of what could be a decade long
cycle as enterprises build out their cloud computing technologies. Open
source underpins most leading current cloud implementations because of
its superior economics and faster innovation. I believe 2010 will be a
year in which open source adoption moves up the stack in cloud
applications to include application servers, databases, integration
tools, and systems management.”
“Cloud computing has the potential to transform the way organizations
deliver applications and consume compute cycles and storage space,” said
Conry-Murray. “We are pleased to have Roger Burkhardt join us for this
important event that we hope will provide a clear picture of the risks
to corporate information and a firm understanding of how cloud
operations will affect an organizations compliance and governance
mandates.”

Addex Pharmaceuticals / Addex: ADX71943 Demonstrates Analgesic Effects in
Pain Models processed and transmitted by Hugin AS. The issuer is solely
responsible for the content of this announcement.
Addex Pharmaceuticals (SWISS: ADXN), the
allosteric modulation company, announced today that ADX71943 has
demonstrated
statistically significant analgesic-like effects in three preclinical
models of
pain.
In the first model, ADX71943 reversed complete Freund adjuvant (CFA)-
induced
reductions in withdrawal thresholds in a dose-related manner, with a
minimum
statistically significant effective oral dose of 10 mg/kg. In a second
model
(Formalin test), ADX71943 showed anti-nociceptive effect after
oral
administration of 3 to 10 mg/kg. In a third model, an increased visceral
pain
threshold was seen using ADX71943 with a minimum statistically
significant
effective dose between 3 and 10 mg/kg.
ADX71943 is an orally available positive allosteric modulator (PAM)
of the
GABA(B) receptor that has potential for treatment of osteoarthritis
pain and
chronic nociceptive pain as well as other indications. ADX71943 has a
good
developability profile and is expected to enter clinical testing in the
fourth
quarter 2010.
“We are impressed with the profile of the compound and by its activity in
these
models. Furthermore,
minimum effective doses observed in the preclinical models and
the
pharmacokinetic properties of the compound support prediction of
treatment
regimens in humans compatible with the target patient population and
disease”
said Sonia Poli, head of non-clinical development at Addex.
Harry Reid, according to Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, authors of a new book (Game Change) on the 2008 election, was an early supporter of Barack Obama. And one reason was that he spotted a racial winner: Obama was “light-skinned. with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” Blacks have been saying such things about one another for ages (hence the mordant rhyme, If youre brown, come on down; if youre black, stay back).

In a region traditionally known for producing loud, blustery autocrats who champion failed economic policies (Castro, Ortega, Chavez), Chile is a quietly remarkable success story. On January 11, it signed an accession agreement to become the first South American member of the OECD. Less than a week later, Chilean voters elected a conservative government for the first time since General Pinochet stepped down 20 years ago.

Safeguard, one of the UKs leading providers of motorhome and caravan insurance is advising all drivers to remain cautious of both opportunistic and organised caravan thefts, following news of the conviction of a gang thought to be responsible for half of all caravan thefts in the UK.
Rita Sadler, Safeguard manager said: “We are very pleased to hear that this group of caravan thieves has finally been stopped. Despite the good news, caravan owners still need to be wary of the risks and take appropriate measures to ensure the security of their property.
“Organised crime rings often target larger, luxury models on a stolen to order basis. We find that the vehicles are at their most vulnerable when left unattended and unsecured, for example in driveways whilst owners are loading their caravans and also at motorway service stations as can be seen in the case of the Ward-McDonagh family.
“Caravan thieves are using more sophisticated methods to get away with their crimes. Locks and alarms are no longer a security guarantee; however there are various measures caravanners can take to ensure the safekeeping of their vehicle. Specially designed tracking devices and mechanical devices such as wheel clamps can greatly reduce the risk of theft. As well as deterring thieves, security conscious caravan owners are likely to receive discounts on their insurance premiums.”

There are a lot of big birds in Utah right now. This would include hundreds of eagles, a few thousand tundra swans and several thousand snow geese. On cue, most of them will leave and fly north, ending their winter migration and eager to start summer living. Until then, though, they are on stage, performing their daily routines. And while they can be seen any day over the next six or so weeks, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has set up special viewing days for the public.
Despite the barren rose bushes in the winter rains, the staff at the Gardens at Heather Farm is already in thinking about spring. With the numerous changes to the sustainable and educational gardens — each one distinct — the gardens staff will offer a comprehensive seven-week training for new docents as a chance to acquire knowledge about the gardens they can share with the public. Sue Phalen, the Gardens former education director and a longtime docent, has seen a lot of changes, additions and renovations to the gardens over the years. Those changes include docents who have come and gone. Docent training gives the Gardens a chance to recruit new volunteers as well as give current docents an update on whats new with the Gardens at Heather Farms, Phalen said.

The Lobby Lounge serves afternoon artisan teas and tableside cocktails via an Art Deco trolley and has a raw bar that features seasonal seafood, sushi and comfort foods with a twist. Live entertainment is played throughout the week and on Sunday afternoons.

WASHINGTON — Life in the nations capital ground to a halt Friday as steady snow fell, the beginning of a storm that forecasters said could be the biggest for the city in modern history. A few thousand people in West Virginia lost electricity because of the storm and more outages were expected. A hospital fire in D.C. sent about three dozen patients scurrying from their rooms to safety in a basement. The blaze started when a snow plow truck caught fire near the building, but no injuries were reported. The regions second snowstorm in less than two months could be “extremely dangerous,” the National Weather Service said. Heavy, wet snow and strong winds threatened to clog roads and paralyze the regions transportation and retail. Airlines canceled flights, schools closed and the federal government sent workers home, where they could be stuck for several days in a region ill-equipped to deal with so much snow. Some area hospitals asked people with four-wheel-drive vehicles to volunteer to pick up doctors and nurses to take them to work.
CASTLE DALE — A man charged with fatally shooting both his parents last year has been found to be mentally incompetent to stand trial and will be sent to the Utah State Hospital for treatment. Peter Simon Sharp, 27, has been evaluated by two mental health professionals while in jail, and both concluded that Sharp is not competent, according to Sharps defense attorney, David Allred. Seventh District Judge George Harmond this week heard reports prepared by both experts before ordering that Sharp to be taken to the state hospital. Sharp also faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, for allegedly aiming a shotgun at one of his sisters.
LOS ANGELES — On February 1, 2010, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled in
favor of Good Samaritan Hospital Los Angeles, represented by Jeffer
Mangels Butler Marmaro LLP, and against the Service Employees
International, United Healthcare Workers-West (SEIU or the Union),
overturning a union decertification election narrowly won by SEIU in
April 2008. The ruling was based on findings that SEIU attempted to
bribe voting members before an election that would have allowed Hospital
employees to choose or reject union representation.
Ten days before voting began, 126 SEIU members received checks from SEIU
which, in an announcement made more than a week later, the Union claimed
were the reimbursement of union dues that the Hospital had allegedly
over-deducted from the paychecks of employees. The announcement also
suggested that the over-deductions may have been intentional and warned
that employees would have no recourse against their employer without a
union.
In most cases, the employees were reimbursed for much more than they
were owed, sometimes as much as three times the correct amount. Some
voting employees received reimbursements that were not owed; others
should have received checks but did not. Overall, the Union sent checks
for $12,000 over what employees were actually owed.
The NLRB concluded that the Union’s distribution of reimbursement checks
improperly interfered with the election results and, therefore,
overturned the election and ordered that a new election take place. SEIU
had won the election by a slim margin, with 209 employees voting in
favor of the Union and 180 supporting decertification.
This is Good Samaritan’s second round against SEIU. The decertification
election in 2008 was a re-run of a 2007 election arising out of the same
decertification petition. SEIU won that election by an extremely narrow
margin, but the election was overturned after the NLRB found that the
Union had interfered with results by engaging in bribery and verbal and
physical coercion.

“Jungle Update” Reveals Macy’s Gift Cards the #1 Purchased Cards
over the Holidays
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Plastic Jungle, the Web’s premier gift card exchange, announced the
“Jungle Update” with results from the 2009-2010 holiday season. In this
first update, Plastic Jungle reported that this past holiday season was
a record period for buying and selling gift cards online. The site has
seen a 250% increase in unique visitors selling their gift cards since
Christmas. Leading into the holiday, the increase in average daily
unique visitors interested in buying gift cards at discount was also up
180%.
Plastic Jungle makes it easy to get the most value out of gift cards,
allowing users to buy gift cards at up to a 30% discount and to get cash
for unwanted gift cards for up to 90% of the unused balance. In the
2009-2010 holiday season, Plastic Jungle users made an average of $85 on
each gift card sale, and gift card buyers saved an average of $10 per
card.
Prior to the holidays, Plastic Jungle saw a peak of gift card purchasing
on December 15 and 16, as shoppers loaded up on discounted cards to get
an extra savings on holiday gifts. The site also saw peaks of gift card
owners selling their cards just after Christmas—on January 4 and January
12—as users cashed in gift cards they received in order to get what they
really wanted or to pay off their holiday debt. In addition, there were
several strong days for selling cards in December, perhaps a sign of
shoppers looking to fund their Christmas shopping.
Macy’s gift cards proved to be the most popular, topping the list of
gift card brands purchased by Plastic Jungle customers. Ten percent of
all gift cards purchased in November, December, and January were Macy’s
gift cards. The top 10 brands (by number of cards sold to Plastic Jungle
buyers) were:

Demonstrating its commitment to a
broader, women-focused initiative, Singularity University (SU) — the
academic institution with the goal of preparing the next generation of
leaders to address “humanitys grand challenges” — recently became a
Corporate Sponsor of Shes Geeky, a series of national technology
unConferences for women. With the sponsorship, SU underscores its continued
commitment to supporting and advancing women in science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM), as well as raising awareness among young
women about the STEM “cool factor.” SU kicked off its sponsorship with the
Shes Geeky unConference held on January 26, 2010 at the Computer History
Museum in Mountain View, Calif.
“During the past decade, some of the most significant advancements and job
opportunities have come from the STEM fields,” said Susan Fonseca-Klein, VP
of Operations and Founding Architect at Singularity University. “This
growth is accelerating, and is expected to do so through this decade and
beyond. With Shes Geeky, SU has the opportunity to support women as they
create and harness the latest innovations. We can also encourage young
womens interest and education in STEM fields, showing them that being a
geek can lead to a better and brighter future — like Marissa Mayer as
the first female engineer at Google. Geek really is the new black, as they
say.”
Shes Geeky hosts unConferences across the US to give women in STEM
technologies an opportunity to get together to learn from each other, and
discuss the unique issues they face in their respective fields. Following
the successful and well-attended Bay Area conference in January 2010,
additional conferences are planned throughout 2010.
“This sponsorship is just the first formal step in our initiative to
support women in technology. In Singularity Universitys inaugural year,
women represented over a third of the Executive and summer Graduate Studies
Programs, respectively,” added Fonseca-Klein. “As we continue progress on
our initiative, we fully expect to increase those numbers, and expand our
engagement with the women in technology community.”

JIM would describe himself as pretty fit. He has some problems with neck and back pain but these dont stop him working in an active physical job. He is a nonsmoker and not significantly overweight. The other day, he was going up and down step ladders, busily installing a new fitted wardrobe system when, quite out of the blue, he noticed that his right foot wasnt working properly when he tried to get up the steps. Later, walking felt odd and his leg seemed to want to give way beneath him. Sensibly he gave up on the wardrobes and made himself a cup of tea, during which time he felt vaguely clumsy but coped OK. But when he tried to use his computer he couldnt click fast enough to make the mouse work. It was at this point he began to take his symptoms seriously and contacted his GP for advice. The doctor, very wisely, advised a trip to hospital and phoned ahead to let them know Jim was on his way. Jim called his daughter to take him there and noticed, during the conversation with her, that he was having a little difficulty getting his words out. His daughter left work and drove him straight up to the emergency department.

Byline: HILARIE STELFOX PAIN-FREE labour without drugs sounds like every mother-to-bes idea of perfect childbirth. The reality is often quite different. But, says hypnotherapist Karen Riley, there really is a way to give birth painlessly. One of her clients, Jill Wilson from Brighouse, used hypnotherapy techniques during labour and to achieve a successful pregnancy. She was so inspired by her experiences that she is now training to be a hypnotherapist herself in order to help other women. Karen, an applied biology graduate and member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis, specialises in working with women who are having difficulty conceiving and couples who want to learn techniques to assist a natural birth. She is the UK director of the HypnoFertility Foundation, which originated in the US, and leads workshops for other therapists. Karen, who lives in Outlane, said: “HypnoFertility works on a physical level. If you get very stressed about something and fertility treatment is very stressful then the bodys fight or flight reaction kicks in and the blood supply to the uterus is diverted to the legs and other parts of the body. “So, at the very time you need a good hormonal balance and a rich blood supply to the uterus, all these resources are going somewhere else.
JOIN thousands of people quitting smoking for their New Years resolution and save your looks. Thats the message from NHS Yorkshire and Humber and hypnotherapist Debbie Taylor-Payne from Hypnotherapy Rooms, Marsh. Ms Taylor-Payne says an increasing number of smokers are coming to her for help because of concerns about premature physical ageing that their habit causes. Smoking can cause ageing of the skin, premature wrinkles around the eyes and lips and it dehydrates the body and depletes it of vital vitamins. Ms Taylor-Payne said: “I have a special interest in helping people to achieve their youthful best and think thats its never too late to stop smoking and enhance your looks and health.”

PROVO — Folded paper cranes could not heal Sadako Sasakis leukemia, but they continue to offer hope that the world can avoid another act of atomic destruction. That concern dissipates with the performance of Shannon Hensley, who enthusiastically plays 12-year-old Sadako. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] MAY I HAVE YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION PLEASE!” Small guy, big mouth: Hes maybe 15, black, skinny kid, but his voice fills up the noisy New York City subway car and then some. “I am selling candy! I got Snickers! I got Peanut MMs! I am trying to make some money! This isnt for school, this isnt for a basketball team, this is for ME! So I can get more candy and MAKE MORE MONEY!” The straphangers appreciate his no-malarkey sales pitch and his entrepreneurial spirit. He does a bit of business, and a few people just give him a buck and skip the candy. His name is Will, and he is not turning down a dollar. But its a tough hustle: Accounting for the cost of his product and his subway pass, it takes him about three hours to earn $20 free and clear, an implied wage of $6.67 an hour–well under minimum wage. On the other hand, its tax-free, and he sets his own hours. Will wants to go to college–and then what? “Be an independent businessman.” Hes already that, and, if persistence really does pay, hes going to do fine for himself. Theres a whole weird little economy on the subway, from candy hustlers like Will to the Chinese ladies who sell pirated DVDs of movies that have just opened in the cinemas. There are acrobats and mariachi bands, good old-fashioned panhandlers, poets, preachers, and percussionists. Its all part of the famous entrepreneurial bustle of New York. But stay on that No. 4 train a few more stops, north of Harlem and into the Bronx, and that entrepreneurial energy evaporates. Not far from the Kingsbridge Road stop is the Eighth Regiment Armory, a fantastically out-of-place 575,000-square-foot brick castle. Its been a lot of different things over the years–barracks, homeless shelter, boat-show venue, a pre-creepified set for Will Smiths I Am Legend–but it currently is vacant, as are a lot of buildings in the Bronx. Passing by, late on a weekday morning, is a local who calls himself “C,” a black man as sturdily built as the armory itself. C very much wants a cigarette. This is a problem, because he is not currently in funds, in no small part because he does not have a job. In fact, at 35 years old, C has never held a job. His friends, acquaintances, known associates (C is a little foggy on whether hes on probation or parole, but hes got some known associates): no jobs, never really had them. His father? Do not ask C about his father. In fact, the only people C can think of who have jobs are women: His mother worked, the mother of his children works. He did know a woman who was dating a taxi driver once. C says he would like to work but is more of an independent businessman. He describes the informal work he has done as “this and that,” and says he would like to “have his own place,” a bar or a nightclub. But dont expect to see him selling candy on the No. 4 train anytime soon. Asked about the recently defeated plan to convert the gigantic fortress that looms over his neighborhood into a shopping mall, C says he hasnt heard about it. If the plan had gone through, Manhattan-based developer Related Companies would have received about $50 million in tax subsidies for a project that would have created as many as a thousand retail jobs and, during its construction, employed a thousand or more highly paid union hardhats. But the city council killed the project. The Bronx delegation demanded that Related enforce upon its leaseholders a requirement that all of the jobs in the mall pay at least $10 an hour, plus benefits, much more than the prevailing wage in the Forever21-and-food-court racket, to say nothing of the $7.25 minimum wage. So a $300 million project, and a couple of thousand new jobs in a neighborhood that needs them, never happened. Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. infamously declared: “The notion that any job is better than no job no longer applies.” The New York Post pithily pointed out that when it comes to real jobs, Diaz has never had one–not in the private sector, anyway–and neither has any other member of the Bronxs city-council delegation: All are lifelong politicians, many of them having held elected offices or political appointments since their early 20s. Diaz himself has been an officeholder since he was 23 years old. Its good work, if you can get it. But theres not much other work to be had in the Bronx, where unemployment is currently at about 13.1 percent. Much of the Bronx is young and black or young and Hispanic. Nationally, the unemployment rate among blacks rose to 16.2 percent in the year-end numbers, while the rate for whites fell to 9.0 percent. For black youths, the numbers are startling: 50 percent for 16-19-year-olds, 26 percent for 20-24-year-olds. A study from the Community Service Society of New York puts actual work-force participation among black men 16-65 years of age in New York City at about 50 percent, and the number for young black men nationwide is just 40 percent.

Two heavily tattooed guys were stubbing out their cigarettes in the cold as we pulled up to City Greek Express, a little gyro shop tucked into a brick building on downtown State Street. The guys werent part of City Greek Express; they belonged to the tattoo parlor next door, which was doing a land-office business on the Saturday we arrived for a late lunch. Theres a beautiful old radio cabinet, made of glowing golden wood, near the entrance. The only seating in this long, narrow dining space is bar-style, giving the whole place a lunch-counter feel, and my kids amused themselves for 20 minutes pretending to make calls on the old copper-finish dial pay phone that bisects the seating on the north wall. “I wish you called people on our phone like this,” my youngest daughter said.
Top Dog/Atlantic recording artist Uncle
Kracker has announced details of his upcoming US headline tour. The
Detroit-based singer-songwriter will kick off the “Happy Hour Tour” on
March 11th with a home state show at The Machine Shop in Flint, Michigan.
Dates will then continue through April (see itinerary below).
The tour comes as Uncle Krackers current hit single, “Smile,” continues to
explode across a variety of radio formats. The track — included on “HAPPY
HOUR,” Uncle Krackers latest album — has already reached #2 at Hot AC,
where it remains a Top 10 favorite. Whats more, “Smile” is now ascending
the airplay charts at both Country and CHR/Pop, where it is now climbing
the Top 40.
In addition, the tracks companion video clip is in rotation at VH1, where
it has been a fixture on the channels “VH1 Top 20 Countdown” since its
initial release last August. And as if all that werent enough, the “Smile”
ringtone is a Top 20 seller on this weeks Nielsen RingScans
top-downloaded master ringtones chart.
Produced by multiple Grammy Award-winner Rob Cavallo (Kid Rock, Green Day,
Paramore), “HAPPY HOUR” sees Uncle Kracker continuing to craft his
idiosyncratic blend of country-flavored pop and rock n roll. Initially
known for his role as DJ in Kid Rocks legendary Twisted Brown Trucker
band, Uncle Kracker made a stunning solo debut with 2001s “DOUBLE WIDE.”
Fueled by the #1 smash, “Follow Me,” the album exploded onto the Billboard
200s top 10 on its way to 2x-platinum certification from the RIAA.

Reporters largely ignored it, but the Department of Health and Human Services released a study showing that Head Starts positive effects peter out by the end of first grade. The study included 44 tests, of which 42 found no statistically significant and lasting improvement. Some positive results are to be expected when you run that many tests, and a footnote points out that the two apparently lasting results disappear after correcting for that tendency.
Management to Participate in Upcoming Investor Meetings Surrounding
the Sterne Agee Financial Services Conference
ALBANY, Ga. — Heritage Financial Group (NASDAQ: HBOS), the holding company for
HeritageBank of the South, today reported financial results for the
fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2009. Even though high credit
costs related to recessionary conditions continue to pressure earnings,
the Companys announced fourth quarter results highlighted a number of
fundamental improvements that will have a positive effect on future
operations, including a significant increase in net interest margin
versus the year-earlier period, as well as substantial loan and deposit
growth attributable largely to fourth quarter 2009 acquisition activity.
For the fourth quarter, the Companys net loss totaled $418,000 or $0.04
per diluted share, improving on a sequential quarter basis from a net
loss of $467,000 or $0.05 per diluted share in the third quarter of
2009. In the fourth quarter of 2008, the Company reported net income of
$232,000 or $0.02 per diluted share. For 2009, the Companys net loss
totaled $336,000 or $0.03 per diluted share compared with a net loss of
$262,000 or $0.03 per diluted share for 2008.
Separately, Heritage Financial Group announced that its management will
participate in a series of meetings with institutional investors and
others in connection with the Sterne Agee Financial Services Conference
on February 9-10, 2010. The Companys presentation to these investors
will be available at the investor relations section of the Companys
website on Tuesday, February 9, 2010.
Commenting on the results, Leonard Dorminey, President and Chief
Executive Officer of Heritage Financial Group, said, “Although we are
disappointed to report a loss for the fourth quarter and full year 2009,
we know the severity of the economic downturn of the past year and
acknowledge the challenges that it has presented for the banking
industry and our borrowers. With declining real estate values,
extraordinarily high unemployment and tough business conditions all
around, it is difficult to avoid the higher credit losses for 2009 that
most banks face. Nevertheless, we are beginning to see increasing signs
of stability in our loan portfolio – indications that problem loans have
leveled off or are nearing a peak, as evidenced by trends in our
criticized and classified loans. Although we have more work to do to
resolve problem loans in our portfolio, we are cautiously optimistic
that the credit cycle is approaching a trough for the Company and that
credit costs will stabilize and begin to improve in 2010.

Market Hall, a soon-to-come venue for upscale, mobile food vendors at Hercules busiest crossroads, is now receiving a warmer welcome from planners who three months ago expressed strong misgivings that it could end up as a tacky cluster of taco trucks, a flea market, trailer park or used-car lot. By the time the city Planning Commission met last week, commissioners seemed largely on board for what essentially was a fait accompli. The project already had received administrative approval, said Hercules Economic Development Director Steve Lawton. Days earlier, the city put out a news release hailing the arrival of Market Hall and with it “more dining options” in Hercules. Market Hall will house gourmet food vendors in a central, steel structure surrounded by shops, a park, bocce courts and a fire pit; it will be open from early morning to 10 p.m., Lawton said, and food vendors will take their wares back to their commissaries at night. Health and safety of the food carts will be the responsibility of Contra Costa Health Services, he said. There will be public and private events at Market Hall, likely including the weekly Hercules Farmers Market, which would be relocated from its current venue in the Home Depot parking lot on the other side of Interstate 80.
Launch trailer to debut tonight on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
NEW YORK — 2K Games announced today its nationwide Return to Rapture with midnight
openings celebrating the launch of the eagerly awaited BioShock® 2,
the shocking sequel to the 2007 Game of the Year. On February 9, more
than 2,500 GameStop and Best Buy stores will open their doors when the
clock strikes midnight to the hordes of Big Daddy fans hungry to get
their hands on and devour BioShock 2. Additionally, those
who pre-ordered the game through GameStop will receive two bonus
characters* – Blanche the Actress and Zigo the Fisherman – to use in the
game’s multiplayer mode. The road to the launch of BioShock 2
kicks off tonight, with the debut of a 3 minute 15 second trailer during
the first commercial break of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
“One of the most exciting aspects of the original BioShock
was how our fans responded with adoration for the game, from creating
homemade Big Daddy suits to their own BioShock-inspired
art and videos,” said Christoph Hartmann, president, 2K. “We felt it was
only fitting to reach out to those passionate fans with nationwide
Return to Rapture midnight openings where they can pick up their copy of BioShock
2 as early as possible.”
Debuting during the first commercial block of NBC’s Late Night with
Jimmy Fallon exclusively in North America, the launch trailer is a
realization of the elements that BioShock 2 fans have been
clamoring for. Breathtaking action set against the backdrop of a
decaying underwater Utopia provides players with the slice of Rapture
that awaits them next week, all presented in a style that is
distinctively representative of the BioShock universe.
BioShock 2 will provide players with the perfect blend of
explosive first-person shooter combat, compelling storytelling and
intense multiplayer to form one of 2010’s most highly anticipated
titles. Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original BioShock,
the halls of Rapture once again echo with sins of the past. Along the
Atlantic coastline, a monster has been snatching little girls and
bringing them back to the undersea city of Rapture. Players step into
the boots of the most iconic denizen of Rapture, the Big Daddy, as they
travel through the decrepit and beautiful fallen city, chasing an unseen
foe in search of answers and their own survival.

A TRAILER for the new movie Daybreakers invites us to “imagine a world where almost everyone is a vampire.” That shouldnt be too hard. It seems like were already living in one. Vampires are everywhere. At the start of 2010, the four novels in Stephenie Meyers Twilight series ranked Nos. 2, 4, 5, and 9 on USA Todays list of bestsellers. Theyve held spots in this range for a couple of years–it might be said that theyve refused to die–and recently theyve spawned a pair of films that have grossed more than half a billion dollars combined. More are on the way. Plenty of other recent books (Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead) and movies (Cirque du Freak, Jennifers Body) also have featured the bloodsucking undead. On TV, The Vampire Diaries is the most-watched show on the CW network. True Blood has aired on HBO for two seasons and has commitments for two more. It recently launched a jewelry line. A clasp necklace with rubies shaped like drops of blood retails for $1,295. One of the hottest rock bands of the moment is Vampire Weekend. Its latest release, put out on January 11, quickly became the most downloaded album on iTunes. I dig vampires as much as the next guy who has read Bram Stokers Dracula three or four times, goes out of his way to watch monster movies, and thinks “Bela Lugosis Dead” by Bauhaus is one of the coolest songs ever recorded. Yet the present ubiquity of vampires is too much, even for me. Once upon a time, vampires were creepy and haunting. Now theyre yawn-inducing bores. Perhaps theyve finally reached their cultural expiration date. At the very least, they should crawl back into their coffins and give the rest of us a break. H. P. Lovecraft, the great 20th-century horror writer, explained the aesthetics of terror: “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” The problem with vampires is that theres nothing left to fear because theres nothing left to know. At one point in their progression through pop culture, it took a purveyor of arcane wisdom like Abraham Van Helsing to defeat them. Nowadays, every fifth grader has memorized the fundamentals of vampire slaying: crucifixes, garlic, sunlight, and so on. Theyve become Halloween cliches.
DEAR JOHN — ** — Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Richard Jenkins; rated PG-13 (violence, sex, profanity, brief gore, vulgarity, slurs); in general release Someday, someone just might make a truly good movie out of a Nicholas Sparks novel. That day is not today, however, and that movie is most definitely not “Dear John.” While this romantic drama is one of the better cinematic Sparks adaptations, thats really not saying much. Its competition includes “Message in a Bottle” (1999), “A Walk to Remember” (2002) and “Nights in Rodanthe” (2008).

WASHINGTON — Americans should park their recalled Toyotas unless driving to dealers for accelerator repairs, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood warned Wednesday — then quickly took it back — as skepticism of company fixes grew and the governments probe expanded to other models in the U.S. and Japan. Questions now are being raised about the brakes on Toyotas marquee Prius hybrid. Harried dealers began receiving parts to repair defective gas pedals in millions of vehicles and said theyd be extending their hours deep into the night to try and catch up. Toyota said that would solve the problem — which it said was extremely rare — of cars unaccountably accelerating. At a congressional hearing, LaHood said his advice to an owner of a recalled Toyota would be to “stop driving it. Take it to a Toyota dealer because they believe they have a fix for it.” His comments prompted new questions and rattled Toyota stockholders, causing shares to plunge 8 percent before they recovered, declining 6 percent for the day. LaHood later told reporters, “What I said in there was obviously a misstatement. What I meant to say. was if you own one of these cars or if youre in doubt, take it to the dealer and theyre going to fix it.”

Business Deal is Slap in the Face to Local Environmentalists
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — “It’s an outrageous slap in the face,” says longtime Charlotte County
Commissioner Adam Cummings. “For years we fought Mosaic’s efforts to
expand strip mining in the Peace River Basin. We spent $12 million doing
it. Now the Tampa Bay Rays want to put the Mosaic name on our sports
center. It’s as if Mosaic is going to get the naming rights for Florida
Field and change its name from the Swamp to the Clay Pit because
that is what they do to natural wetlands.”
The dispute centers on the Tampa Bay Rays need to acquire a sponsor for
the Charlotte County Sports Park. The County allowed the Ray’s to sell
naming rights. The County will receive $75K annually from the agreement.
The Rays propose to sell call the park, “Mosaic Field.”
“For those of us who know the environmental damage and the threats to
our water supply which this company causes, it’s a disgrace,” said Sue
Reske with the Greater Charlotte Harbor Group of the Sierra Club.
“Mosaic’s latest water permit request is for 3 times the amount which
all 250,000 of us downstream use each day. It’s simply outrageous for
the Rays to ask Charlotte County, which has been working to reinvent
itself as a green community, to consider selling our primary public
symbol to this greedy polluter.”
“It’s indisputable that the Peace River basin is suffering from the
effects of wall-to-wall phosphate strip mines,” said Dennis Mader,
President of 3PR, an environmental group working to protect the Peace
River Watershed.

China: Panda trip WASHINGTON — They were treated like pop idols — except for being stuck in travel crates. Adoring crowds and television viewers watched Thursday as American-born giant pandas Mei Lan and Tai Shan were loaded onto a special cargo jet for a flight to their new homes in China for breeding. Normally placid, 3-year-old Mei Lan from Zoo Atlanta whirled and paced in her crate as flashbulbs popped. Tai Shan, a 4-year-old born in Washington, hid at first but was drawn into view as his longtime keepers at the National Zoo knelt silently at his crate to say goodbye, hand-feeding him slices of apples and pears.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Lux Biosciences, Inc. today announced its submission of simultaneous
regulatory filings to both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
and European Medicines Agency (EMA) seeking marketing approval for its
investigational drug LUVENIQ™ (LX211; oral voclosporin) for the
treatment of noninfectious uveitis involving the intermediate or
posterior segments of the eye. Efficacy of LX211 in support of the
indication sought was demonstrated in two controlled, randomized,
multi-center trials including data from 450 patients at 56 sites in 7
countries. The safety data include a total of 2,110 subjects who
received voclosporin during its clinical development in uveitis and
psoriasis, about 500 of whom were treated for >36 weeks and about 200
for >52 weeks. LX211 had previously received orphan drug status from FDA
and EMA, and fast track status from FDA. Based on the latter, Lux
Biosciences has requested priority review from FDA.
“The results seen in the LUMINATE clinical trial program, the largest
completed to date in non-infectious uveitis, support our belief that
LX211 has the potential to significantly advance the treatment of this
blinding disease,” said Ulrich Grau, Ph.D., Lux Biosciences’ President
and Chief Executive Officer. “This is the first regulatory filing of
voclosporin in any indication, in any country, which made this
submission a complex task. It incorporates the research and development
undertaken by our collaboration partner Isotechnika over more than a
decade, and that of Lux Biosciences over the last 3 ½ years.
Simultaneous filings of both a U.S. New Drug Application (NDA) and a
European Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for LX211 represent a
major milestone for Lux Biosciences.”
He added, “I wish to thank all of the Lux Biosciences employees, our
partner Isotechnika, investigators, patients, contractors and advisors
who contributed to the development program and made these on-time
filings possible. I am not aware of a company of our small size having
accomplished a submission of this magnitude for a new molecular entity
simultaneously in the United States and Europe. It is a tribute to our
networked approach to development, whereby a large team led and managed
by a small core group was able to complete a major international drug
development program in record time.”
Results from the LUMINATE program, submitted in support of both the U.S.
and European marketing applications, showed that LX211 at the
recommended dose of 0.4 mg/kg twice daily provided clinically meaningful
efficacy and enabled preservation of vision in treated patients, a
critical patient benefit. Study LX211-01, in subjects with uncontrolled
uveitis, showed LX211 to rapidly reduce inflammation in subjects with
moderately severe disease, either alone or in combination with systemic
corticosteroids. Subjects receiving LX211 experienced a 50% reduction in
mean vitreous haze as compared to 29% in placebo-treated subjects. The
proportion of subjects demonstrating an improvement of at least 2 grades
in vitreous haze or a grade of ≤1 for the study eye at last visit was
64% in the LX211 group as compared to 46% in the placebo group.
Moreover, treatment with LX211 permitted the withdrawal of
immunosuppressive therapy and the use of 5 mg/day or less of prednisone.
Study LX211-02 demonstrated the efficacy of LX211 in subjects whose
disease was clinically quiescent at the time of enrollment. Nearly 90%
of the patients in this study were receiving one or more forms of
systemic immunosuppression prior to randomization. In this study,
treatment with LX211 resulted in a 50% reduction in the rate of
inflammatory exacerbations at the 26-week primary endpoint compared to
those receiving placebo; a similar result was observed at 50 weeks. This
indicates that relative to placebo, a patient’s exposure to ocular
inflammatory exacerbations that lead to loss of vision and to
potentially damaging exposure to high rescue doses of steroids is
approximately cut in half when LX211 therapy is administered at the
clinically effective dose. Treatment with LX211 also enabled the
concomitant withdrawal of immunosuppressive therapy and allowed the
reduction of systemic corticosteroids to 5 mg/day or less, as well as
the complete elimination of topical corticosteroid therapy.

THE dilemmas of youth are universal. Consider Nicholas and Victoria, a pair of late-blossoming youngsters currently making their way toward adulthood at a multiplex near you. Respectively male and female, American and English, middle-class and filthy rich, they nonetheless face a nearly identical set of difficulties as they navigate the choppy seas of adolescence. Both have foolish mothers and malign, controlling stepfather-figures. Both are variously ignored, manipulated, and bullied by many of the other adults around them. Both are virgins with a strong romantic streak. And both are separated from the girl/guy of their dreams by distance, legal obligations, and even language barriers. Well, fine, maybe their situations arent quite identical. Nicholas is Nick Twisp, the lovesick hero of Youth in Revolt, which fancies itself the thinking teenagers sex comedy. Its American Pie rewritten for Juno fans and Arrested Development obsessives–complete with Michael Cera, star of both, as the deadpan, quietly desperate hero. His milieu is West Coast suburbia; his mother is a divorcee who takes up with truck drivers and police officers; and his lady love is Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), the precocious daughter of trailer-park evangelicals, who shares his interest in old movies, world travel, and grand romantic gestures. Victoria, meanwhile, is Alexandrina Victoria Hanover, best remembered as a formidable widow presiding over the British Empires peak, but portrayed by Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria as a glowing girl-queen with a lot to learn. Her milieu is the palaces of 1830s Europe; her menacing stepfather-figure is Sir John Conroy (Mark Strong), who hoped to become Britains de facto regent by dominating Victoria through her mother; and her would-be lover is her cousin, His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who shares Victorias interest in opera, horseback riding, and programs of social reform. If this description makes The Young Victoria sound like the more snobbish of the two movies, do not be deceived. No double feature is more likely to instill a fondness for the aristocratic pomposities of the 19th century, and a weariness with the smug pretensions of the 21st.

Titan Bet is offering for the first time sports betting for the National Football League championship through its sportsbook at Titanbet.com. The 44th annual Super Bowl between the 14-2 Indianapolis Colts and the 13-3 New Orleans Saints in Miami Gardens, Florida on February 7th 2010 is slated to be one of the most memorable championship games in football history.
Titan Bet has placed the current Super Bowl betting odds at 1.45 for a Colts win and 2.77 for a Saints victory. Compounding this spread are additional markets for players to wager on. Offered in Spanish, French, German and English the Titan Bet sportsbook is quickly emerging as one of the premier sportsbooks online.
The game is expected to be a high scoring, fast paced battle between two of the best offences in the NFL today. Four-time league MVP quarterback Peyton Manning is one of the main highlights, and while the Colts are poised for victory, the Saints offense, carried by quarterback Drew Brees has led the league in both yardage and points. For the Saints to win, a strong defensive line needs to be constant and relentless but as long as the Saints defensive is neutralized, expect a decisive Colts victory.
“Titan Bet is proud to provide its players the opportunity to win big on Super Bowl XLIV, one of the most widely watched sporting events in the world”, commented Euro Partners Marketing VP, Marc Kenigsberg. “Through our growing language offering we expect to penetrate further into new sectors, while increasing our competitive edge for online sports betting “.

“I believe that sport, like art, has the power to unite us, and that peace is always possible and can be built by seemingly simple gestures,” said the Governor General, patron of the Olympic Truce. This dialogue will engage Canadians from coast to coast to coast to break down the walls of prejudice and injustice, and to work together on building mutual understanding for a stronger Canada and a better humanity”.

In an effort to save the imperiled health-care bill, Democrats cut a tentative deal with organized labor that would exempt unionized employees from an excise tax on high-cost healthcare plans. Of the many unsavory bargains and rotten deals that have characterized the rush to get this thing passed (the “Louisiana Purchase,” the “Cornhusker Kickback,” etc.), the “Labor Loophole” surely takes the prize.
Nevada officials said the state may drop out of Medicaid if the health-care bill passes. Instead it would help its low-income legal residents participate in the federally subsidized exchanges that the bill would establish. The resulting insurance policies would doubtless be more attractive to beneficiaries than Medicaid is.
CarePass Leverages Payers’ Employers’ Investment in Promoting
Wellness by Engaging Employees in Managing Their Healthcare
WASHINGTON — Dossia
Chairman Mike Critelli, a recognized innovator in health benefits and
workforce wellness, introduced Allviant
Corporation’s CarePass™
technology at the Center for Health Value Innovation (CHVI) event on
February 2 in Washington, D.C. Critelli touted CarePass’ ability to
deliver a new level of convenience that breaks down the barriers
consumers face in trying to manage their healthcare.
CarePass enables consumers to control their personal health service
communications and transactions by aggregating and delivering
context-relevant information securely — via phone, e-mail or text
messaging — depending on their preference. Additionally, CarePass
connects a network of service providers such as health savings vendors,
portals, personal health records (PHRs), content sites, nurse call
services, physicians and dentists. With the click of a button, CarePass
members can schedule and confirm appointments, receive alerts or
prescription reminders and verify deductibles or HSA balances.
“CarePass really helps organizations realize the full value of the
benefits they work so hard to deliver to their employees and their
families because it offers a practical, real-world method of
understanding and managing those benefits,” states Critelli.
According to Lilian Myers, CEO of Allviant, “Consumer health engagement
is the newest and biggest challenge. American companies spent an average
of $329 per employee on cash incentives to drive engagement in 2008 —
up from $192 the year prior. Human behavior dictates that lasting
engagement is a result of sense of control and relevance. CarePass was
specifically designed to answer those issues.”

Where a defendant formerly convicted of a sex-abuse crime was subjected to a warrantless search by parole officers who immediately found evidence that he violated his parole by drinking alcohol and upon opening his laptop found a file labeled “Daddy and Daughter,” the officers had reasonable suspicion to search further for child pornography, and the district court properly denied a motion to suppress evidence seized during the search, and a subsequent search warrant with a defect did not call for application of the exclusionary rule because the defect was the result of a clerical error by a detective. Bernie Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison in June for operating the biggest Ponzi scheme (not including the Federal Reserve) ever. No word on any sentence for the regulators who failed to do anything about it, despite being handed a detailed analysts of the fraud a decade earlier. Former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain managed to redecorate his office, including an $87K area rug, and pass out $5.8 billion in bonuses to Merrill executives in 2008 before handing over the reins of Merrill to BofA CEO Ken Lewis. Lewis showed Thain – who could win the title of all- time clueless greedy corporate executive – the door in 2009. Lewis would leave as well after he acknowledged he was bullied by the Fed and Treasury to close the Merrill deal despite revelations of fourth quarter losses that were not shared with shareholders. In early 2009, deaf people became the latest victims of financial fraudsters. In February, CNBC reported that the SEC stopped an alleged Ponzi scheme by Billions Coupons, a firm in Hawaii that raised more than $4-4 million from deaf investors. Billions Coupons reportedly raised the cash by holding investment seminars for investors who were deaf, and then the firms CEO pocketed the profits.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Steven Twork, a new Market Manager for Bal Seal Engineering, Inc.,
will signal the official opening of his company’s exhibit at next week’s
Medical Design Manufacturing West event by recording a video report
from the show floor.
According to Twork, Bal Seal is producing video reports like this
one more frequently, because the company sees the medium as an efficient
means of engaging potential customers.
“We find that video works really well for us,” says Twork,
“because it cuts through the clutter. It’s the most efficient way for us
to demonstrate how our products work, and it moves at the right speed
for our audience of design engineers and OEMs. It also allows us to
illustrate the kind of engineering resources we can bring to bear on a
project.”
Twork says he’ll also incorporate one of the company’s newer
dynamic animations in his show report. The photorealistic sequence will
show an ultrasound transducer, an insulin pump and a joint fixation
device concept, all of which are examples of Bal Seal’s ability to
collaborate with OEMs during the early product development stage.

NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) announced today that
Weta Digital, a world leader in digital effects and animation, relied on
NetApp® storage for the production of the record-breaking film “Avatar.”
“Avatar” was filmed with revolutionary new motion-capture techniques, which
generated more data than any other movie in history (more than the entire
Lord of the Rings trilogy combined), creating a new set of challenges never
before faced by the digital effects industry. The key data storage
challenge for Weta Digital during the production of “Avatar” was how to
efficiently manage the huge amounts of data generated and rendered during
production. They also needed to provide the artists with fast access to
that data when changes were made to the master texture files. (A texture
file is a picture of an object used in “Avatar,” such as a leaf or a thread
of hair, which is wrapped around a 3D model during the rendering process.)
Because reliability and data management were of paramount importance, Weta
used its NetApp storage arrays to store all of the high-value,
artist-generated data. Weta had to deal with a large number of unique data
hosts, a read-heavy workload, and very high numbers of medium-sized files.
Weta worked with NetApp and Fujitsu New Zealand to develop a scalable
storage solution, which reduced the amount of manual data management
required in the process of rendering files and maximized the
price-to-performance ratio for its storage environment.
Together, NetApp and Weta devised a system that allowed Weta to
automatically balance the throughput requirements of the renderwall (the
computer system used for real-time rendering) to provide more than 35,000
rendering cores with the fastest possible access to frequently used texture
files. This solution was based on NetApp FlexCache® to maintain high-speed
access to the updated texture files to all users simultaneously. By taking
advantage of NetApp FlexCache systems, Weta Digital reduced manual data
movement and management by 95%, greatly reducing pressure on technical
staff and speeding production time.
“A traditional storage approach would have made it very difficult to manage
the workload required for Avatar,” said Paul Ryan, CTO of Weta Digital.
“Having partnered with NetApp successfully for 10 years, we were delighted
they delivered an innovative, efficient storage environment that reduced
our data management overhead costs by 95% and increased our storage
price-to-performance ratio by over 40%. Most importantly, this led to
faster rendering time and more productive artists.”

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — After conducting market research across Architecture, Engineering and
Construction it became clear that there’s a need for better
communication across the trades, with organization of documentation into
a single database and improved Quality (QA/QC) programs, for specific
projects and across the entire organization.
As a thought leader in the mobile technology space, DataSource
Mobility is hosting an online seminar with construction case
studies, sponsored by Panasonic
Toughbook and Vela
Systems to discuss how construction teams can increase efficiencies
on the jobsite and across the enterprise with real-time collaboration
and Quality programs, February 25, 2010 at 1pm EDT.
Mobile computing is bridging the gap between the construction jobsite
and the back-office for Contractors, Owners, Architects and Engineers.
Coupled with construction field mobility software, organizations can
enable field teams to “get out from the trailer” and implement
Tablet-PC-enabled jobsite processes for quality control and project
management. Instead of using paper or entering information from a desk
computer, construction professionals are moving to a seamless mobile

Catalyst’s Chris Shipman and Todd Clapp join InSite’s Board
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — InSite Wireless Group, LLC, owner, operator and manager of wireless
communication tower site facilities and distributed antenna systems
(“DAS”), today announced that it has received funding from Catalyst
Investors, a New York-based growth private equity firm. InSite plans to
use the capital to expand the company through acquisitions and
construction of new towers and DAS projects. Catalyst partners Chris
Shipman and Todd Clapp will join InSite’s Board.
“This investment, in combination with our existing credit facility, will
enable us to acquire and build additional towers and DAS facilities to
serve the wireless communications industry,” said David E. Weisman,
President and CEO, InSite Wireless Group, LLC. “We have known the
Catalyst partners since the 1990s when they were with TD Bank and
invested in our predecessor company. Catalyst’s industry knowledge and
expertise, combined with their network of industry leaders in the
communications sector, make them uniquely qualified to help grow the
business and take the company to the next level.”
“Our team has been investing in the wireless tower sector for 15 years
and we recognize the opportunities that InSite has to grow and thrive,”
said Shipman. “Wireless carriers continue to expand their networks as
usage increases rapidly, driven in particular by the mass adoption of
smart phones. InSite is the ideal partner for us due to its exceptional
management team, scalable platform, and the lease-up potential offered
by its existing towers and DAS facilities.”
“In addition to the company’s success in wireless towers, InSite’s
strong DAS business is in a high-growth area that gives the company an
enormous opportunity for continued expansion,” said Clapp. “For example,
InSite’s DAS project with the Boston subway system is already up and
running and under construction for the next phase of station platforms
and connecting tunnels, which, upon completion, will provide riders with
continuous wireless coverage throughout the entire subway transit
system.”
